Research
Centers
The School's
research centers, including Garvan Woodland Gardens, the University of
Arkansas Community Design Center, and the Delta Research & Design
Center, enable students to work directly with state and local citizens
and leaders
to gain a first-hand understanding of real-world situations and conditions.
Garvan Woodland Gardens
Garvan Woodland Gardens, Arkansas' leading botanical garden, is overseen
by the School of Architecture and its Department of Landscape Architecture.
Located near Hot Springs National Park, this 210-acre woodland habitat
features a variety of garden settings and unique architectural structures
designed and developed by world-renowned specialists in botanical gardens,
landscape architecture, and architecture. Students have the opportunity
to study at one of the state's major recreational and cultural resources
and one of the country’s most unique botanical gardens.
UACDC
Since 1995 the University
of Arkansas Community Design Center (UACDC) has provided long-range physical and economic planning assistance for
communities
and organizations that otherwise would not have access to these valuable
services. Using teams of students and professional staff, UACDC assists
Arkansas hometowns by identifying and addressing each community's unique
and specific needs.
UACDC prepares plans and helps communities develop projects that preserve
historic downtown areas, check sprawl, and protect the natural environment.
The Design Center also conducts research on design models that address
issues of contemporary development, such as "smart growth," rural
planning and environments that promote physical activity. UACDC assists
in University of Arkansas campus planning, as well. UACDC services are
enhanced by partnerships with the Center for Business and Economic Research
(CBER) at the Sam M. Walton College of Business and the Fulbright College
Public Policy Program.
DRDC
Established in 2001 by the School of Architecture with financial support
from the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation, the Delta Research & Design
Center (DRDC), located in Clarendon, extends UACDC outreach to the Arkansas
Delta. The DRDC hosts an annual economic development seminar that brings
together state and local officials and representatives from local and non-profit
groups to discuss innovative strategies for enhancing rural Arkansas. DRDC
also publishes the Delta Research Bulletin and sponsors an elementary and
secondary school outreach program.
