International Studies

The international study program exposes students to complex urban environments and introduces them to new cultures. In addition to the required semester of international study, students may choose to travel with faculty to significant cities and natural environments throughout the world. The School offers a number of annual scholarships that support student travel, and promotes a diverse student population through informal exchange programs with schools in Italy and Mexico.

Located in a palazzo near the Piazza Navona in the heart of Rome, the Rome Study Center for Architecture and the Humanities immerses fourth-year architecture students in a twelve-week program that offers courses in architectural design, architectural and urban history, and Italian cultural history. Students participate in northern study trips to Florence, Venice, and other cities, and have the opportunity to participate in classes, benefit from the faculty, and utilize the facilities in the Universita degli studi Roma Tre.

Since 1994 the University of Arkansas School of Architecture has provided students with the opportunity for a wide range of cultural and architectural experiences through the Mexico Summer Urban Studio. In collaboration with the Universidad de Anahuac, students investigate local, regional, and international tectonic strategies through a design studio directed by faculty from both schools and joined by noted Mexican architects and architectural critics. The 11-week program also includes extensive field trips to the major architectural centers of Mexico.

The Landscape Architecture Department exposes students to three historic cultures through their European Summer Field Studies. The six-week program provides opportunities for students to analyze the design of ancient and contemporary gardens, and investigate the relationships among buildings, boulevards, parks and natural features that comprise an urban fabric. Coursework begins in the School's Rome Study Center, where daily studios focusing on urban form and garden design are supplemented by field trips to Siena, Pompeii, and Florence. Study in Paris, France and southern Great Britain completes the program.
