technology courses

The Architectural Technology sequence in the Department of Architecture is designed to teach the importance of the symbiotic relationship between space and constructed form. Through a sequence of six interrelated courses the Architectural Technology sequence introduces concepts and specifics about building materials, structural design, environmental control systems, basic sustainability strategies, and current technologies that lay the foundations for structural, material, and system exploration in the design studio. The Technology courses build on each other with the ultimate goal of promoting the synthesis of innovative construction methods and architectural design throughout a student's professional career.

Architectural Technology I:
Introduces the basic interrelationship of site, environmental, structural, and enclosure systems.

Architectural Technology II:
Introduction to the basic theories of structures, structural behavior, and the design of simple structural systems in wood and steel.

Architectural Technology III:
Elaboration of the processes of materials and assemblies with an emphasis on the design of the building envelope. A portion of the class also addresses complex steel structural systems.

Architectural Technology IV:
An in-depth focus on building systems and systems integration including HVAC, lighting, plumbing, and fire protection. A portion of the course includes basic concrete beam theory and design.

Architectural Technology V:
A topical survey of comprehensive technology applications including high-rise case studies, contemporary materials, surface structures, acoustics, and intelligent building systems.

Architectural Technology VI:
In conjunction with the 5th year Comprehensive Studio, this course explores materials, systems, and assemblies appropriate for the concurrent comprehensive project.
